A Rainy, Beautiful Summer Wedding at Grangefields, Cripps & Co, Derbyshire
Gemma and Ed’s wedding at Grangefields, part of the Cripps & Co group in Derbyshire, was a day full of love, family and atmosphere. A classic summer downpour proved relentless for much of the day, but it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits!
Grangefields is one of those venues that immediately impresses you. Set in the Derbyshire countryside near Ashbourne, it’s reached by a long winding drive surrounded by open fields. The venue itself is a beautiful mix of old and new, with its restored brick barns and an industrial-style dining space that feels modern but full of character. These kinds of venues, with a thoughtful blend of sleek modernity and historical features, are arguably my favourite.
Bridal prep at a Derbyshire cottage
Gemma got ready in a nearby cottage about twenty minutes from the venue with her six bridesmaids. The morning was calm and happy, with everyone helping each other and getting excited for the day ahead.
She and Ed had been together for nine years before getting married, having met at work. Their daughter, who was just twelve weeks old, was there too and made the morning feel extra special.
Arriving at Grangefields
Arriving at Grangefields, I remember watching Gemma’s car making its way down the long private drive through a rare break the rain, which really built the anticipation! We made the most of a quiet quarter of an hour while Gemma waited for her big entrance, having a chat and grabbing some relaxed bridal party photos.
The ceremony took place in the main barn, a truly beautiful space that is reminiscent of a chapel. The space is full of original features and soft light that gives it a calm, intimate atmosphere. It’s ideal for indoor ceremonies- especially when the weather doesn’t cooperate!
Confetti and countryside photos
After the ceremony, the rain eased off just enough for everyone to head out onto the terrace for confetti. Guests covered Gemma and Ed in fresh petals as they walked out together as newlyweds.
We made the most of the breaks in the weather for some portraits around the grounds. Grangefields is surrounded by countryside and has so many interesting backdrops, from old brick walls to open fields and newer architectural details. It’s a really versatile space to photograph, even in challenging conditions.
Dining and speeches
The dining area at Grangefields is one of its highlights. It has a modern, industrial look with an open show kitchen you can see into, which just adds a real buzzing energy to the space. Guests loved watching the food being prepared, and it felt so intimate and just the right amount of boujie!
The speeches were warm and funny, with loved ones sharing tons of hilarious and heartfelt stories about Gemma and Ed, whilst they cradled their sweet little girl throughout.
What stood out about this wedding
What I loved most about photographing Gemma and Ed’s day was how Grangefields combines old and modern design so well. The original buildings have been restored with real care, and the newer elements fit in beautifully. It has a mix of elegance, rustic charm and modern style that makes it an inspiring space for photography and a truly magical place for any couple and their guests! Even with the rain, the day felt full of warmth and genuine moments between people, which is what I love to capture most.
